KWK “Klimontów”. Variable history

The “Klimontów” Coal Mine in Sosnowiec was founded in 1904 – 1908 initially as part of KWK “Niwka”, and from 1908 it was a separate mining plant. In the following years, the second “Klimontów II” mine was created, which began operating in 1913.

In the following years, both mines not only changed the name, but were also extinguished or combined with other mining plants in Sosnowiec. In the years 1920 – 1926 KWK “Klimontów I”, operating as an independent plant, from 1908 was transformed into KWK “Władysław” and operated until 1933, while KWK “Klimontów II” in KWK “Jadwiga”, which operated until 1930. After the grinding of both mines, the decision was made to sink them and it was only in 1941 that the German occupation authorities decided to resume the extraction of hard coal, giving them the name “Bismarck” I (former KWK “Klimontów II”) and “Bismarck II” (former KWK “Klimontów I”).

Both mines before the end of World War II, in 1944 were immobilized and only in 1945 after joining them to Dąbrowski the union of the coal industry and KWK “Mortimer”, the extraction of hard coal began in the “Klimontimer-Mortimer” mine. In 1951, the mine was disconnected and operated as independent enterprises.

In 1974, KWK “Klimontów” was combined with KWK “Mortimer-Porąbka” in KWK “Czerwone Zagłębie” and operated under this name until 1992, when the changes to KWK “Porąbka-Klimonts” were re-made. The mine ended the operation of hard coal in 1998. The liquidation of the plant was completed on December 31, 2000, and on March 31, 2000, which was in the liquidation of KWK “Porąbka-Klimonts” joined the created company Restructuring Company SA, which was created by four independent mines: “Jan Kanty”, KWK, “Porąbka-Klimontów”, KWK “Saturn” and KWK “Sosnowiec”.
